Four Wheels, Four Years, and Zero Tears
Some sessions mean a little more than others—and Maverick’s 4-year birthday session was definitely one of those.
I’ve had the honor of photographing Maverick since he was about one year old, and over the years, I’ve watched him grow not only in age, but in confidence. We’ve done around six sessions together, and each one has gotten better and better. But this one? This one was a milestone.
For the first time ever… he didn’t cry once. 🥹
If you’ve ever photographed (or parented) young kids, you know that photos aren’t always their favorite activity and that’s okay. Some kids just aren’t into it. Honestly, some grown men don’t like having their photo taken either. 😂 So from the very beginning, we’ve always taken things at Maverick’s pace.
Over the years, we’ve tried it all:
- Mom and Dad in the photos
- Slowly inching away to get a few solo shots
- Staying close the entire session
- And eventually… stepping out of the room completely
And with time, trust, and patience, it worked.
Lately, Mom and Dad have trusted me enough to leave the room, and every single time, Maverick has done amazing. This session was no different. Once they stepped out, he relaxed, opened up, and just got to be himself.
One of my favorite parts of this session was Mom’s idea to bring Maverick’s favorite toys...his monster trucks. 🚛💥 And let me tell you…
He played.
He talked.
He showed me which trucks were his favorites.
He laughed.
He smiled.
He was just being a four-year-old little boy and that’s exactly what made this session so special.
Not every session needs to be perfectly posed. Sometimes, the best photos happen when kids are simply allowed to be kids.
Watching Maverick grow more comfortable with me over the years has been such a gift. Seeing his confidence build, session after session, is one of the biggest rewards of what I do. I’m so proud of how far he’s come, and I’m so proud of this session.
I truly have such a good feeling about his next one. 💙
Because here’s the thing: every child is different. Some warm up quickly. Some take a little longer. And that’s okay. There is no rush. There is no pressure. There is only patience, trust, and creating a space where kids feel safe and happy.
And honestly?
That’s one of my favorite perks of this job.
Getting to grow with my clients.
Getting to earn their trust.
Getting to capture their milestones.
Getting to watch little ones like Maverick blossom over time.
Sessions like this remind me exactly why I love what I do. 💫
